Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro. The name itself is a mystery wreathed in clouds. It might mean Mountain of Light, Mountain of Greatness or Mountain of Caravans. Or it might not. The local people, the Wachagga, don’t even have a name for the whole massif, only Kipoo (now known as Kibo) for the familiar snowy peak that stands imperious, overseer of the continent, the summit of Africa. Kilimanjaro, by any name, is a metaphor for the compelling beauty of East Africa. When you see it, you understand why. Not only is this the highest peak on the African continent; it is also the tallest free-standing mountain in the World, rising in breathtaking isolation from the surrounding coastal scrubland – elevation around 900 metres – to an imperious 5,895 metres (19,336 feet). Kilimanjaro is one of the World’s most accessible high summits, a beacon for visitors from around the World.

Lemosho Route: Trekking Mt. Kilimanjaro on the Lemosho Route takes longer than the alternatives, but it is a bit quieter and gives you plenty of time to acclimatize with the weather.  The landscape is varied, with possible animal sightings on the first day’s hike, when you start out from Londorosi Gate.

Machame Route: Approaching Legendary Mt.Kilimanjaro from the south-west, you take the popular Machame Route, a challenging trek, with a total trip time of six days, which gives you more time to acclimatization. You will pass through Lush rainforest and Alpine moorland.

Marangu Route: Ascend Africa’s highest peak, using the popular Marangu Route. Expect a variety of landscapes and some wildlife on the lower slopes. Marangu Route allows for extra acclimatization time, giving you an excellent chance of reaching the snow-capped summit.

Rongai Route: Trekking on the Rongai Route,  expect rainforest and moorland landscapes, sighting of Colobus Monkeys Aand Elephants on the lower slopes.

Umbwe Route: The Umbwe Route, which is based in the south, is the most scenic and difficult one to trek Mt. Kilimanjaro. The initial trekking line is extremely steep, muddy and generally strenuous making it only suitable for well-trained mountaineers.

Accommodation on the Mountain will be in tented camps – What a True Adventure with Cheka Safaris!
