Mkomazi National Park

One Of the fantastic destinations of bird watchers with over 400 bird species

Mkomazi National Park

Nestled in the northeastern region of Tanzania, beneath the majestic slopes of the Pare and Usambara Mountains, lies Mkomazi National Park—a hidden treasure among Tanzania's parks. Stretching into Tsavo National Park in Kenya, Mkomazi contributes to the Greater Tsavo Ecosystem, a vast wilderness spanning 43,000 square kilometers.

Mkomazi National Park showcases one of Tanzania's most distinctive ecosystems. As the southernmost reach of the Somali semi-arid belt and the Sahel Biosphere, it forms a unique biogeographic corridor connecting the Sahara Desert to Central Africa. This distinctive positioning allows Mkomazi to host species not found elsewhere in Tanzania. Despite being safeguarded as Mkomazi and Umba Game Reserves since 1951, it was only in 2008 that the area was designated a national park under the stewardship of Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), preserving its 3,200 square kilometers of wild, untamed beauty.

Wildlife in Mkomazi

Since Mkomazi attained National Park status, it has experienced a significant decline in poaching, cattle grazing, fires, and other illegal activities. The Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), in collaboration with the George Adamson African Wildlife Preservation Trust, has enhanced the park's infrastructure by improving the road network and establishing multiple water catchments. These efforts have led to a notable increase in wildlife populations. Visitors can now witness herds of up to a hundred zebras, elands, elephants, and buffalos. The park is also home to numerous kongonis, giraffes, dik-diks, and ostriches, while the drier regions support species like gerenuk, lesser kudu, and beisa oryx. Although large cats remain elusive, there is a chance to spot serval cats, caracals, wild cats, and even wild dogs.
